We Disappointed Bulgarians.

INTERVIEW Standartnews: Nikolai Tchukanov

341413a.jpg

One year has passed and we haven't explained anything to people, says PM Nikolay Chukanov.

Nikolai Tchukanov is an MP in the 39th National Assembly. He is the deputy chairman of the Oborishte Movement for National Revival, the right-hand of its leader Tosho Peikov. Earlier he was the co-founder of the UDF-Rousse. He walked out of the UDF in the spring of 1997. Tchukanov graduated from a private art school. In Parliament, he is a member of the Homeland Security and Social Policy Committees.

- Mr. Chukanov, why people feel so disappointed after one year of the NMS rule, why don't they believe that the pre-election pledges will be fulfilled?

- Bulgarians felt sick and tired of under-the-counter deals and arrangements between political forces. The national capital has been dished out and the stolen money - laundered and legalized.

- Be as it may, but don't you think that people's patience is nearly exhausted - you have raised prices on electricity, central heating, etc. You simply take the bread out of their mouths. What explanations can you give to those whom you promised a better life to?

- One year has passed and we didn't explain anything to the Bulgarian people. We haven't explained what legacy the previous government handed down. We inherited the practice which we had promised to change. We must change our mentality and start reviving the country like reasonable people would have done. In Bulgaria every government has to sweep under the carpet the wrongdoings of its predecessors.

- Why should a government be interested in sweeping it under the carpet?

- Unfortunately, it is not decided either in the plenary hall or in the Council of Ministers. These problems are resolved in other offices, in other places. This is the sad picture we see in Bulgaria.
